A woman pulled from her burning home in Atlanta’s East Lake neighborhood was in critical condition Sunday.
The woman and her son were inside the house when the fire began around 2 a.m. Sunday, Atlanta fire officials told Channel 2 Action News. The son was in stable condition. Authorities have not identified the woman and her son.
Several neighbors heard the woman screaming, and they broke the side window of the house and tried to pull the woman out by her feet, said Tayibaa Garcia, who lives nearby. But it wasn’t until firefighters arrived that she was freed.
“One of the neighbors was on scene and helped direct the firefighters to the part of the house that she was most likely in,” said Assistant Chief Chris Wessels of Atlanta Fire and Rescue. “That was a huge help for us because once we can narrow down the search … we’re going to get the victims out a lot quicker.”
He said the fire department quickly extinguished the flames and removed the woman from the house.
Garcia said she thought she heard an explosion at the home.
The cause of fire is under investigation.
