A Cobb County basketball player is still recovering after he and another teen were hit by a car in front of their high school.

Malik Spellman plays point guard for Wheeler High School in Marietta, Channel 2 Action News reported. But the teen has been in the hospital with serious injuries since a woman smashed her car into him and another teen last week.

Wheeler officials told Channel 2 the school was donating old weight room equipment and the teens were getting ready to load a weight rack before they were hit.

Cobb police said the teens were crossing Holt Road using the crosswalk just after 7 p.m. March 9, AJC.com previously reported. As the two boys carried the equipment across the road, a woman driving a black 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK350 northbound struck them with her car.

Marty Herrin, a witness who jumped out of his car to help, described a horrific scene. The impact was so violent that both victims flew in the air, he said soon after the incident.

“It was obvious that they were not stopping,” Herrin said. “I told my wife, ‘They’re not stopping!’ And then boom. She hit them, and they went flying. It was awful.”

After he jumped out of his car, he asked his wife to call 911.

“One guy was knocked to the side of the road into the sidewalk area,” Herrin said. “The other one bounced off the windshield and then landed in the middle of (the) lane. I stood there talking to him, trying to tell him, ‘Breathe. Stay with us.' It was so surreal.”

Police identified the driver as Nancy Valentine, 73, of Marietta. She has not been charged in connection with the crash.

The other teen has been released, but Spellman remains in a hospital. A GoFundMe has been set up to the help the Spellmans.

The Cobb County Department of Transportation said the county plans to install blinking lights and cameras near the crosswalk, as well as more signage.
