A driver’s dashboard camera captured the harrowing moment when motorists swerved to avoid a little girl walking down a busy Cherokee County road.

The incident occurred Thursday evening on Sixes Road after the 4-year-old wandered out of her yard and down the street, Cherokee County sheriff’s Capt. Jay Baker said.

The video obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows a driver in the right lane abruptly stop after seeing the child walking toward him.

Drivers in the left lane also slammed on their brakes, causing a minor fender-bender between an SUV and the vehicle in front of it. Another driver in the left lane who seemingly couldn’t tell what was happening was forced to swerve around a car that stopped in front of them.

Baker said the little girl was in her front yard with her grandmother when she took off down the street.

“It wasn’t like she wasn’t being monitored,” he said. “The grandmother just happened to have her back turned.”

No one was injured in the incident and the little girl was returned to the custody of her grandmother, authorities said. No charges are expected.
