Why did the turkey cross the road? And more importantly, why an interstate?

A Covington man would like to know why. That’s because a feathered friend fowled up his afternoon drive.

Kelly Teague, 35, told investigators he was driving northbound on I-575 near Sixes Road when he saw three turkeys crossing the interstate, according to Tim Cavender with the Cherokee County fire department. That’s when a driver next to him struck a turkey, sending the bird flying straight into Teague’s windshield.

Teague was able to pull over to the median, despite having a few cuts and scratches on his face, Cavender said. Two passengers were not injured.

The turkey, whose name was not released, was alive when firefighters arrived. But the crash did appear to ruffle some feathers.

Firefighters led the bird away from the interstate and back to safety, Cavender said.
