Police ID pedestrian hit by SUV on busy Cobb County road

Police have identified the pedestrian who died Thursday after being hit by an SUV on a busy Cobb County road.
Investigators said Sidney D. Tharpe, 66, of Roaring River, N.C., was struck by the vehicle about 6:30 a.m.
Tharpe was walking north on Riverside Parkway near the I-20 overpass when a black 2010 Chevrolet Suburban made contact, Cobb police spokesman Neil Penirelli said. Tharpe was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Suburban was identified as David Porter, 47, of Austell.
No other details were released.

The incident prompted hours of road closures in the area. Riverside Parkway north of I-20 was closed and the ramp from I-20 West to Riverside Parkway was also shut down while police investigated.
