A family of eight was displaced after a fire broke out and caused heavy smoke damage inside their Gwinnett County home.

The blaze erupted at the back of the house, according to Gwinnett fire and emergency officials. Firefighters were sent to the home in the 2300 block of Ellis Court in Snellville at around 8:30 a.m. Thursday after a 911 caller said flames were coming from the house’s back bedroom, department spokesman Donald Strother said.

When crews arrived, they saw the back corner on the right side was “well involved,” he said.

Two people were inside the house when the blaze started. Both got out before crews arrived after smoke alarms went off inside the house, Strother said.

“Firefighters swiftly deployed two attack hose lines and made entry into the structure to begin extinguishing the blaze,” Strother said. “Their quick attack allowed them to put the flames out within 10 minutes of their arrival.”

The family, which is made up of three adults and five children, is receiving temporary assistance from the American Red Cross.

The home is not considered to be a total loss, Strother said, but the right side was heavily damaged by fire. The entire house was damaged by smoke, he said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire. No one was hurt in the incident, authorities said.
