Investigators are trying to identify a body that was found in a ditch on the side of an Athens road Wednesday.
A construction crew working in the 300 block of Athena Drive discovered the body about 4:30 p.m., Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Capt. John A. Radford said Thursday in a news release. It is not clear how long the body had been there, and little is known about how the person died, according to police. Radford did not say if investigators suspect foul play.
Athens-Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson said it was “impossible” to make an identification at the scene “due to the state of decomposition,” but the person might be a man.
The body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy and possible identification.
