A bag of trash that fell from an overpass Wednesday spilled shattered glass all over I-285 West near I-75 in Cobb County, clogging up the interstate for about an hour, authorities confirmed.

Cobb County Fire Department spokesman Denell Boyd told AJC.com the glass was the result of a bag of trash falling from the overpass around noon. The reason why the bag fell is unknown.

The cleanup effort took less than an hour, but it caused heavy delays to stretch back for miles.

Only one lane of traffic was getting by while crews worked to clear the broken glass with brooms and fire hoses.

All lanes reopened around 12:40 p.m.
