A Barrow County teacher was arrested after the teenager she allegedly supplied drugs to was found dead the next day.

Emily Smith, a sixth-grade math teacher at Winder Barrow Middle School, is accused of selling methadone, a synthetic opiate, and Xanax to an 18-year-old on Feb. 13, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The girl, whom Smith considered a friend, was found dead the following night in her home.

“Ms. Smith conspired with the victim by cellphone in reference to obtaining a controlled substance prior to her death,” Captain Faye Spaulding of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office told Channel 2.

Toxicology reports stated there were high levels of controlled substances in the teenager’s system, but the cause of death was not determined, according to Spaulding.

“We are not sure how or why she was trying to obtain the controlled substance for the teenager,” the captain said.
