Braves win, and so do Atlanta’s mayor and police chief
There was more on the line in the World Series than just baseball bragging rights. Atlanta’s mayor and police chief entered friendly wagers with their counterparts in Houston.
The Braves won the series late Tuesday. And on Wednesday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and police Chief Rodney Bryant wasted no time basking in the glory.
“Hey, Chief @TroyFinner, is the @houstonpolice headquarters a good address to send your jersey?” Atlanta police posted on Twitter. “We’ll need you to be super stylish in your pictures around Houston.”
Finner didn’t immediately respond to the post. But last week, Finner accepted the jersey bet.
“When @astros win the #WorldSeries, Bryant will wear the jersey that Chief Finner wore at the 2021 home opener,” Houston police posted.
Bottoms and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner had a similar wager. On Wednesday, Turner conceded to Bottoms.
“To the @Braves and Mayor @KeishaBottoms, congratulations #Atlanta on winning your first #WorldSeries since 1995,” Turner posted on Twitter. “We will hold up our end of our friendly wager.”
In addition to a jersey exchange, the losing mayor agreed to send a “taste” of their city to the winner. Sylvester plans to send barbecue, he said.
“This is why I LOVE this guy! Such a class act,” Bottoms tweeted. “I’ve been stressing about how to get that peach cobbler to you @SylvesterTurner. I’m so happy I can scratch that off the To Do List!”
Though the Braves won the championship in Houston, fans in Atlanta filled Truist Park and The Battery to cheer on the team. Despite the crowds, Cobb County police reported no major issues.
“For the most part, the fans did indeed keep it classy as they celebrated,” department spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said.
