A trio of suspects in a cellphone store robbery was arrested Wednesday afternoon after leading three police agencies on a high-speed chase in Douglas County. And the county’s sheriff said the suspects may be linked to other similar crimes.
“I think we’ve got some serial robbers that’ve been doing this quite a bit off the street,” Sheriff Phil Miller told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Police were able to locate the stolen phones and also found $3,000 in the suspects’ vehicle after it crashed on I-20 westbound, Miller said. But four patrol cars were damaged during the chase, which started on Thornton Road and ended near the Tyson Road overpass.
“Everybody is OK, no injures, so I’m so proud of that,” Miller said. “The good news is some real bad guys are off the street and they’re in our jail now.”
The three suspects, whose names were not released, are accused of an armed robbery at the AT&T store on Thornton Road that started the chain of events Wednesday afternoon, according to police.
Douglasville police, sheriff’s deputies and Georgia State Patrol troopers assisted in the chase westbound on I-20, Miller said. During the chase, one deputy was involved in a crash with a tractor-trailer, damaging the patrol car, he said. Three other patrol cars were damaged when the chase ended with a crash.
Further westbound on I-20, police used a maneuver to stop the suspects’ vehicle, causing it to crash, and the trio started running into nearby woods, Miller said. With the help of police dogs, the three suspects were soon taken into custody, police said.
Lanes in both directions of I-20 were temporarily blocked during the investigation, creating traffic backups.
