The 71st Annual Francis McGahee Youth Day Parade will take place Saturday, Oct. 9. The long-standing Roswell event began in 1950 by a group of parents who wanted to honor the youth of the city. In 1951, Mayor Ford Rucker proclaimed the second Saturday in October as “Roswell Youth Day.”
To avoid any confusion regarding the Youth Day Parade for elected officials, political candidates and officials who are also campaigning for office, the Roswell Recreation Commission has created a set of guidelines. The Roswell City Council recently approved updates to the elected officials and election campaign protocol.
Each portion of the policy is designed to ensure the day is focused on honoring Roswell youth. Entries to the parade must not only include youth in their entries, but they must be the “center of attention.” Printed campaign material cannot be handed out along the parade route.
All locally elected officials are placed at the beginning of the parade. In this section of the parade, there is no campaigning allowed.
