The Atlanta City Council voted recently to install traffic calming devices on Virginia Circle between Todd Road and Barnett Street.

Traffic calming devices, in this case, mean speed tables. The Department of Public Works is responsible for the administration of the traffic calming program and includes a traffic engineering study to determine if the street meets the requirements for speed tables.

The affected neighborhood planning unit, police and fire departments are notified and given an opportunity to comment on installing traffic calming devices in the area. In addition, all utility companies and other companies that have franchise agreements with the city must be contacted to determine whether any work in the public right-of-way is planned along the street.

Finally, and often the most challenging requirement, 75% of property owners must agree to have traffic calming devices installed before any speed tables can be installed.
