Kennesaw’s plans to add a 4,000-seat amphitheater to its newly expanded downtown park advanced Monday when City Council approved a $356,000 contract with Croy Engineering.

The Marietta-based consultant will oversee design and construction services of the new amphitheater at Depot Park as part of the resolution council members approved unanimously.

Depot Park is in the midst of a major restoration and expansion. The park, located at 2828 Cherokee St., is in Kennesaw’s historic downtown across the street from the city’s Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History and next door to the recently completed Gateway Park.

Depot Park unveiled the first slate of improvements June 25 when it re-opened following construction. City leaders say the first seven phases of the park’s revamping are complete.

The new amphitheater is part of phases 8-12, which will be funded by a $6 million special purpose local option sales tax that Kennesaw voters approved last year.

The SPLOST will cover the addition of a festival area as well as new and expanded parking for Depot Park and the Civil War museum. It will also include the new amphitheater.

Depot Park already has a 60-seat Tunnel Amphitheater for weddings and small lectures, according to the city’s website.

Construction on the new amphitheater is tentatively set to begin in August 2022 and expected to continue for a year, according to the resolution.

“We want to keep this project moving forward,” City Manager Jeff Drobney said. “You’ve seen the work that we’ve done so far. And this just gives us an opportunity to continue to move down that path.”

“Absolutely, long anticipated,” Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling concurred moments before the vote.

“Keep the ball rolling,” the mayor said after the resolution was unanimously approved.
