Photos: Buckhead couple still thriving in home they built in 1965

Carol and Paul Muldawer built their Buckhead home in 1965. They decided then to keep the walls a clean white as a background for their art and lives, and they’ve kept it that way ever since. In the living room they have a wood sculpture by Charles Mitchell in the window, a glass sculpture by Caleb Nichols on the coffee table and a Steuben Glass bowl on the coffee table. In the living room of their Fulton County home, Carol and Paul Muldawer have a sofa by Thayer Coggin, and a mid-century coffee table by Drexel Heritage. They also have a chair by Warren Platner, with its iconic wire base and soft curves, one of several Platner pieces they have throughout the house. At one end of their living room Carol and Paul Muldawer have a bookcase that runs the length of the wall. A small sitting area at this end of the room is made up of two diamond chairs by Harry Bertoia with display pedestals between them featuring two wood bowls by Ed Moulthroup from Signature. When their two children moved out of their home, Carol and Paul Muldawer decided their guest room was obsolete and transitioned it to a reading room with two Italian leather reclining chairs. Along the top of the bookshelf near the high horizontal windows are pottery and baskets from Africa, some of which were gifts from Mayor Andrew Young when Carol worked in his office. The hallways of Paul and Carol Muldawer’s home were designed to work like European streets, terminating in stunning works of art the way streets in Europe tend to end at iconic buildings. The dining room of Paul and Carol Muldawer’s home is the center of the house. Paul designed it so that the “children’s house” where his children’s bedrooms were and the “parents’ house” where Carol and his room is were joined by the dining room. On one wall hangs a 3D art piece made of puppets that depicts a couple kissing on a Paris train and a group of disapproving onlookers. Paul and Carol Muldawer purchased their mid-century modern dining room table at Bloom Furniture Company in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and they’ve had it since they built their home in 1965. One wall of their dining room is made of sliding glass doors that open up onto their deck, and the opposite wall is mirrored so that diners feel completely surrounded by nature. Aside from updated flooring, Carol and Paul Muldawer’s kitchen is much the same as when they built their home in 1965. Carol picked out the cabinet pulls after seeing similar hardware in the Georgia Governor’s Mansion when Jimmy Carter was governor. They love the solid walnut cabinets and the fact that the space is compact but functional. “The concept there was a fully functioning comfortable kitchen with the minimum possible steps,” said Paul. “So that everything is in arms’ reach.” Text by Shannon Dominy/Photo by Reynolds Rogers

The breakfast room of Paul and Carol Muldawer’s Buckhead home has large windows on two walls so that the space feels open and organic. One wall is covered in folk art, with pieces by Howard Finster, R. A. Miller, Tom Chambers and Tubby Brown, among others, creating a colorful and whimsical gallery wall. When Paul Muldawer designed his family home in 1965, he created separate wings of the house, one with his son and daughter’s rooms and one with his and his wife’s room along with a guest room. Their daughter’s room is still decorated the way that she left it when she moved out. When Paul Muldawer, who is an architect, designed his home in 1965, he was inspired by Italian Renaissance architect Leon Battista Alberti, who said, “The city is like a great house, and the house in its turn a small city.” Paul designed the deck of his home to be the “piazza” of the home, enclosed by the house on three sides and open to the deciduous forest on the fourth. Carol Muldawer has a collection of bird houses just beyond her carport outside of her Fulton County home. She’s been collecting them for decades, so many of them were gifts or special houses she found at estate sales or craft shows.
