It is that time of the year that we all look forward to, or dread – family reunion season.
Aside from the location, how much alcohol to buy and who made the potato salad, we all know that music can make or break a family gathering.
“Music is very important,” said Penny Moore of the Discover DeKalb Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It always get people in the mood for getting around and dancing. And it can connect different generations.”
In any given year, DeKalb County will host 400 family reunions a year. Moore conducts about eight family reunion workshops annually to help families plan and navigate logistics. To get the party started, she is partial to tunes like “The Cha Cha Slide,” and “The Wobble.”
AJC Sepia likes line dancing also. And the O’Jays, Mary J. Blige, Teena Marie, the Blackbyrds and Funkadelic.
The AJC Sepia: Family Reunion & Summer Cookout Playlist is a fun and diverse mix of dance, soul, funk and nostalgia that will have your cousins sweating, crying, laughing and of course dancing all night – or at least until the Spades game breaks out.
