Someone’s going to have to hold our earrings while we read Mary Kay Andrews’ new novel, “Ladies’ Night.”
The book concerns lifestyle blogger Grace Stanton, whose personal and professional lives both appear to be on the upswing at first. Her darling husband, who enjoys roaring around in a swank Audi convertible, manages her career.
“Her life is great and very glamorous,” Andrews told us in an interview.
Then one night, Grace can’t sleep and hey! Where’s her man? Grace wanders into the garage, home of the prized Audi, and there’s husband dearest logging some mileage with Grace’s assistant in the front seat.
“He assures her it’s not what it looks like, that she’s going crazy,” Andrews said. “He tells her, ‘When you calm down, we’ll talk.’”
Instead, Grace jumps behind the wheel, revs the engine and parks the Audi in the bottom of their pool. Because MKA is nicer than we are, the husband is not in the trunk at the time. Instead he locks Grace out of everything: her house, their neighborhood, even her blog.
That hussy of an assistant takes over the blog, and as things further unravel, Grace is ordered to “divorce recovery therapy.” There, she connects with others going through various drama and trauma. It is within these new friendships that Grace’s real therapy and renewal begin.
Andrews is an avid social media practitioner, and to research the book, she crowd-sourced tales of outrageous divorce scenarios. She also talked to some prominent formerly wed Atlantans about their scandalous separations. Again, because she is nicer than we are, she wouldn’t say who.
“It’s about betrayal and divorce and revenge and redemption,” Andrews said of her new novel. “Ultimately redemption. Ultimately, the best revenge is getting on and getting over it.”
“Ladies’ Night” is her 20th book, and she wants to celebrate with you. A book-launch party planned for Monday features cocktails and appetizers, a fun swag bag and chances to win prizes including — how cool is this — a week’s use of an Audi convertible.
“My favorite thing about the launch party is the Audi,” Andrews said.
If you win, please do not drive it into any swimming pools. And don’t stuff anyone into the trunk.
