Fulton County Schools approved spending up to $1,402,725 to order a fresh supply of masks for this school year.

The board of education recently authorized the district to buy masks on an as-needed basis from five different vendors through June 30. The district will pay for the masks using federal COVID-19 funding.

The district will purchase disposable masks for children and adults plus reusable masks for adults.

The school system will continue to distribute the face coverings through schools and bus drivers.

As of October 1, the district recorded more than 3,600 cases of COVID-19 among students and staff since the start of school. Fourteen metro Atlanta school districts documented more than 35,000 cases during that time.

Fulton currently requires masks to be worn on buses and in all buildings. The rule, enacted in early August, mandates masks in all schools located in cities where COVID-19 cases exceed 100 cases per 100,000 residents over a 14-day period.

A Fulton County judge on Oct. 5 denied an emergency request from parents to bar the district from enforcing the mask mandate.

The district is the state’s fourth largest school system, with more than 90,000 students.
