UPS is getting more outsourced business in Atlanta, and worldwide. So it's expanding warehouse space here and elsewhere to take it on.
In Atlanta, the company intends to expand its distribution center capacity by 30 percent -- the addition of about one Wal-Mart Supercenter, bringing the metro Atlanta total to 794,300 square feet of space, or about 4.3 Supercenters.
Company spokesman Norman Black would not say how much capacity was being added elsewhere, but described the growth as "significant" for one year. Expansion is taking place in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, as well as the U.S., he said.
Health care companies and other businesses are outsourcing their distribution channels, Black said, and turning to UPS. Aerospace, industrial, retail and high tech businesses are also contributing to the growth.
In Atlanta, Black said, it is too soon to say how many jobs would be added as the new centers are built.
