Union election scheduled for Delta simulator technicians

Jan 12, 2010

Flight simulator technicians from Delta Air Lines and its merger partner Northwest Airlines will soon vote on whether to be represented by a union or not.

The group of nearly 100 employees who operate and maintain Delta's flight simulators in Atlanta and Minneapolis at the combined Delta will vote in a union representation election by phone and online in February. Simulator technicians from Northwest are represented by the International Association of Machinists, while those from Delta are non-union. The National Mediation Board, which governs labor relations at airlines and railroads, will tabulate votes Feb. 25.

The union said it filed its application last August to call for an election, but the process was delayed because of a dispute over how the employees should be classified.

Yet to be scheduled are union representation elections for flight attendants and other ground workers at Delta. The flight attendants union and machinists union last year withdrew their applications for those elections, as the National Mediation Board considers a change in rules that could make it significantly easier for unions to organize.
