Southern Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Co., said it has acquired a California solar plant that is expected to generate enough power to serve more than 60,000 homes.
Financial terms of the deal to acquire the Solar Gen 2 facility from First Solar Inc. were not disclosed. Construction on of the plant is expected to be completed during the fourth quarter.
Southern Power has been growing its wholesale business, partly by teaming up with Ted Turner’s Turner Renewal Energy company and acquiring solar facilities in the Southwest. The partnership was started in 2010.
In May, the two companies acquired the Macho Springs Solar Facility in New Mexico from First Solar, which builds and operates the plants.
The electricity from the Solar Gen 2 plant, a project with solar panels spanning 1,452 acres in Imperial County, will be sold to San Diego Gas & Electric Co. under a long-term contract.
Southern will initially own 100 percent of the plant and First Solar will later acquire a minority stake.
