Silver Airways ending most Atlanta service

April 9, 2014

Silver Airways is discontinuing most of its flights from Atlanta, saying the routes have not attracted enough passengers and that other factors made it “uneconomical” to continue the service.

Fort Lauderdale-based Silver Airways said it will discontinue flights from Atlanta to Muscle Shoals, Ala. and to Greenville, Hattiesburg-Laurel, Tupelo and Meridian in Mississippi. It has given 90-day notice to the U.S. Department of Transportation of its plans.

Silver took over those routes in 2012 from Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and served them under the federal Essential Air Service program, which pays subsidies to airlines that fly to communities that otherwise might not have air service.

Silver said it plans to continue its Atlanta-Macon, Macon-Orlando and Atlanta-Lewisburg/Greenbrier, W. Va. flights, saying those flights serve as connections between the airline’s Washington Dulles, Atlanta and Florida networks.
