NCR continues to focus on software

Duluth technology company NCR is continuing its push to sell more software, including the launch this week of new checkout technology geared toward small businesses.

The company that traditionally sold ATMs, cash registers and other hardware has been shifting its focus to higher-profit software-as-a-service, which NCR chairman and CEO Bill Nuti said has led to profitable growth for the company.

NCR made $80 million in the second quarter of the year, a 128.6 percent increase over the $35 million the company made in the same quarter of 2011.

"Our orders surged in the second quarter," Nuti said.

While Nuti said he sees new signs of difficulty in the economy, he thinks the business trends for NCR are healthy.

The company continues to expand into Brazil and while maintaining both hardware and software sales in the U.S. and worldwide. Bank ATM orders have been up, Nuti said.

But software sales have driven its profits. In addition to the small-business checkout technology NCR Silver, the company also launched the web-based customer loyalty tool NCR Customer Voice and is expanding its travel offerings on smart phones for boarding passes and airport information.
