Delta Air Lines will put $12 million toward a $229 million project to overhaul a major terminal at Los Angeles International Airport.
Atlanta-based Delta is joining the city of L.A. and Los Angeles World Airports in funding the Terminal 5 project, which should be completed in 2015. The project is part of a $4.1-billion plan to modernize LAX.
The largest part of the Terminal 5 cost will be borne by LAWA, the city’s airport oversight and operations department, but $25 million will come from the Transportation Security Administration.
Last month, Delta announced plans to increase service at LAX with daily year-round and seasonal service to 14 destinations. Delta said it will operate 118 peak-day departures from Los Angeles to 40 nonstop destinations, including Sydney and Tokyo. The airline also operates transcontinental flights between L.A. and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport seven times daily.
“Los Angeles is a critical global gateway for Delta’s domestic and international customers and we are thrilled this project – which will greatly improve the customer experience from curbside to planeside – is under way,” Ranjan Goswami, Delta’s managing director – West Coast Sales, said in a statement.
