Atlanta-based homebuilder Beazer Homes USA said Brian Beazer is stepping down as chairman and will be succeeded by Stephen Zelnak Jr.

Zelnak, who has been on the board of directors since 2003, is chairman and majority owner of the investment firm ZP Enterprises.

Beazer Homes’ roots extend back to 1890, when the Beazer family built its first home for sale in England. The company began building multiple homes and communities in the 1930s.

Brian Beazer joined the family business in 1960. He served as chief executive officer of Beazer PLC from 1968 to 1983. Three years later the company moved to the U.S.

Beazer served as chairman and CEO from 1983 until 1991, when the company was acquired by Hanson PLC, another British company.

Beazer has been non-executive chairman since the company’s initial public offering in 1994 and will stand for re-election to the board in February.
