Gary Reedy, a former executive of health care products maker Johnson & Johnson, has been named chief executive officer of the American Cancer Society.

The Atlanta-based nonprofit said Thursday that Reedy will succeed John Seffrin, who announced last year that he would retire this year. Reedy takes over as CEO on April 27.

Up until March 27, Reedy served as worldwide vice president of government affairs and policy for Johnson & Johnson, a multibillion-dollar maker of consumer, pharmaceutical and medical device products. He also has held leadership positions at SmithKline Beecham and Centocor.

The American Cancer Society said Reedy has been a longtime volunteer of the health organization.

Seffrin has served as CEO since 1992, beginning four years after the organization moved its international headquarters from New York City to Atlanta.
