AirTran Airways announced it plans to start flights from Atlanta to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic next February.
Orlando-based AirTran will start regularly scheduled twice-weekly flights to Punta Cana from Atlanta starting Feb. 16. AirTran already operates charter flights to Punta Cana from other cities.
AirTran applied in June for federal permission to operate the Punta Cana flights, as previously reported by the AJC, and the airline received approval this month.
Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines already flies from Atlanta to Punta Cana. For AirTran, the new route would be part of its expansion in the Caribbean, where it also flies to Montego Bay, Aruba and Nassau.
