Four of GHSF Daily’s Top 10 Games this week matched up county rivals. Those would be Savannah Christian vs. Calvary Day (Chatham County), Marist vs. St. Pius (DeKalb County), McEachern vs. North Cobb (Cobb County) and Prince Avenue Christian vs. Athens Academy (Oconee County).
Who knew Athens Academy was in Oconee? That’s why there’s a list below. It contains the Georgia counties that have at least two GHSA football teams. Those teams are ranked using the computer Maxwell Ratings.
First, here are five random observations that might be labeled, “What’s up with that?”
*1. East Coweta is 5-0. Northgate is 6-0. They are in Coweta County. They aren’t playing each other this year. East Coweta would be a 1-point favorite on a neutral field, according to Maxwell.
*2. Westside of Macon has never lost to a Bibb County school. The Seminoles’ record against county opponents is 25-0. Westside’s best county rival this season would be Howard. Both teams are 5-1, Howard in AAAA, Westside in AAA. They didn’t schedule each other.
*3. Trion and Chattooga, the only two schools in Chattooga County, are very closely matched, according to Maxwell. They have not played each other since 1971.
*4. Laney and Aquinas are the best two teams in Richmond County by a long shot. They’ve not played each other since 1975. Maxwell would favor Laney by about two points on a neutral field.
*5. Other games that aren’t on the schedule include Carrollton vs. Central, Creekside vs. Woodward Academy, Dublin vs. West Laurens, and Buford vs. any number of Gwinnett County schools.
