Outstanding performances at Westlake Relays

In just six years, the Westlake Relays has become one of the top meets in the southeast. This year’s meet, which took place Saturday, once again produced a number of great performances.

On the girls side, Westlake’s Anriel Howard won the triple jump with a 37-7 ¼ feet, while the Lions’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams took first in times of 46.83 seconds and 3 minutes, 53.58 seconds, respectively. Kelsey Heyward of South Carolina’s J.L. Mann won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.59, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s T’aja Cameron won the 100 meters in 11.96 and Campbell’s Alexis Jones won the 300-meter hurdles in 42.79.

For the boys, Westlake’s Treymane Flagler won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.08, Stephenson’s Denzel Harper won the 300-meter hurdles in 38.32 and the long jump with a leap of 23-1, Jonathan Mays of New Manchester won the high jump clearing 6-10, Isaiah Rogers won the shot put with a toss of 60-4 and Jeremiah Holloman of Newton won the triple jump with a 47-1.

Metro area counties crown champs

Here is a recap of the county championship meets around metro Atlanta. Again, county championships are for community bragging rights only and do not have any bearing on region or sectional meets which are used to determine the participants in the state championship meet next month.

Atlanta

Boys Champion:  Grady, 166 points (2. Mays, 122; 3. North Atlanta, 86 ½)

Top performances:  Ronquavious Cullins of Grady won the 300-meter hurdles in 40.43.  Grady's two 1,600-meter relays teams took first and second.  Romartis Bell of Mays won the 100 meters in 10.79 seconds and led the Raiders' 400-meter relay team to a win in 42.16.  North Atlanta's Jackson Pearce won the 1,600 meters (4:42.06) and the 3,200 meters (10:38.41). Qwazon Alkhaliq of Maynard Jackson won the long jump (19-11) and the triple jump (44-2). Carver's Jeremiah Abby won the shot put (43-7 ½) and the discus (129-4).

Girls Champion:  Maynard Jackson, 195 (2. North Atlanta, 91; 3. Carver, 78)

Top performances:  Garielle Netter of Maynard Jackson won the 100 in 12.13 and the 200 in 25.43. Also, Jackson's Courtney Jones won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.65, the 300-meter hurdles in 48.52 and the high jump (4-feet, 8-inches). Camilla Sims of Jackson won the shot put (34-9 ½) and the discus (104-10). Carver's Darlene Samuel won the 400 meters (59.69) and the 800 meters (2:26.27).

Clayton County

Boys Champion:  Mt. Zion, 133 (2. Morrow, 83; 3. Lovejoy, 75)

Top Performances:  Joshua Simmons of Mt. Zion won the 400 meters in 49.24 and the 300-meter hurdles (40.44).  Forest Park’s 400-meter relay team won the title in 42.23.  Austin Gray of Morrow won the 1,600 meters (4:44.56) and the 3.200 meters (10:30.39).

Girls Champion:  Forest Park, 132 (2. Riverdale, 91 ½; 3. Lovejoy, 82 ½)

Top Performances:  Bria Matthews of Forest Park won the 100-meter hurdles (14.74), long jump (19-2) and triple jump (41-11 ½). Lauren Epps of Forest Park won the 300-meter hurdles in 46.48. Imani Clark of Lovejoy won the 100 (12.69) and 200 meters (25.76).  Jasmine Wright of Forest Park won the 800 (2:32.01) and the 1,600 meters (5:59.28). Forest Park swept the 400- (48.30) and 1,600-meter (4:08.22) relays.

Cobb County

Boys Champion:  Marietta, 107 (2. McEachern, 87 ½ ; 3. Campbell and Walton, 70)

Top Performances:  Jawan Nobles of Campbell won the 100 (10.80) and the 200 meters (21.80). Robert Dunning of Kennesaw Mountain won the 110- (13.95) and 300-meter (37.35) hurdles, as well as the high jump (6-4). Robby Keough of Whitfield Academy won the 800 (1:52.27) and 1,600 (4:18.89).

Girls Champion:  McEachern, 134 (2. Marietta, 83; 3. Pope, 79)

Top Performances:  MaKenzie Dunmore of McEachern won the 200 (23.95) and 400 meters (54.34). Hope Glenn of Pope won the 100 meters in 12.03. Erin Hardnett of Campbell won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.34. Mary Jeanne Assinzo won the 800 meters (2:14.12) and the  1,600 (5:02.21). McEachern’s two 400-meter relay teams took first and second, as did its two 1,600-meter relay teams.  Tatiana Taylor of Walton won the shot put (40-1 ¾) and the discus (114-08)

DeKalb County

Boys Champion:   Southwest DeKalb, 98 (2. Stephenson, 88 ½; 3. Lakeside-DeKalb, 64)

Top Performances:  Twins Terryon and Terry Conwell of Southwest DeKalb dominated the short sprints for the Panthers. Terryon won the 100 (10.70) and 200 (21.71) meters, while Terry placed second in the 200 (21.87) and first in the 400 (49.17) meters.Chris McBride of Redan won the long jump (23-4) and the triple jump (44-8). Denzel Harper of Stephenson won the 110-meter (14.81) and 300-meter (38.59) hurdles.  Abbas Abbkar of Clarkston won the 800 (1:56.09) and 1,600 (4:26.05) meters.

Girls Champion:  Chamblee, 102 (2. Redan, 96 ½; 3. Miller Grove, 83 ½)

Top Performances:  Venida Fagan of Chamblee won the 100 (12.22) and 200 (24.88) meters.  Shequilla McClain of Redan won the 100- (14.35) and 300- (44.30) meter hurdles.  Ansley Heavern won the 1,600 (5:26.72) and 3,200 (11:45.20) meters.

Fulton County

Boys Champion:  Milton, 113 (2. Westlake, 112 ½; 3. Roswell, 81 ½)

Top Performances:  Preston Meade of Milton won the 3,200 meters in 9:46.45.  Ryan Clark of Banneker won the 200 (21.13) and 400 (47.53) meters. Treymane Flagler of Westlake won the 300-meter hurdles in 37.69.

Girls Champion:  Westlake, 164 (2. North Springs, 85; 3. Johns Creek, 62)

Top Performances:  Kennedy Simon of Westlake won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.88, while teammate Sydney Henderson won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.86. Micaiah Ransby of North Springs won the 200 (24.33) and 400 (54.62) meters. Lindsey Billings of Northview won the 1,600 meters in a time of 4:57.21. Hayden Merrick of Johns Creek won the shot put (40-4) and discus (144-10).

Gwinnett County

Boys Champion:  Brookwood, 148 (2. Mill Creek, 106; 3. Collins Hill, 53)

Top Performances:  Miles Yapp of Brookwood won the 1,600 (4:20.72) and 3,200 (9:28.28) meters.  Austin Lyons of Archer won the 110- (14.22) and 300- (38.50) meter hurdles.

Girls Champion:  Brookwood, 101 (2. Archer, 77; 3. Parkview, 74)

Top Performances:  Mackenzie Ellison of Brookwood won the 800 meters in 2:18.33. Serenity Douglas of Archer won the 200 (24.68) and 400 (56.73) meters. Bola Hambolu of Collins Hill won the long jump (17-3 ½) and the triple jump (38-1).
