Inclement weather this week has resulted in four quarterfinals games being delayed until today. Weather permitting, the semifinals should be played as schedule on Saturday at various sites, with the championship games set for March 5 and March 7 in Macon.
The only true Cinderella left in the field appears to be the Terrell County girls (19-9), a No. 12 seed on the public school side. The Greenwave from Dawson, located 30 minutes north of Albany, edged No. 5 Claxton 34-33 in the first round, and then ended No. 4 Commerce's miracle run in the quarterfinals, 41-31 this week. Terrell County last advanced to the state playoffs in 2009, finished as runners-up in 2008 and last won a state title in 2005.
The No. 11 Randolph-Clay girls are still alive as well, but don't really qualify as a "Cinderella". The Devils are the defending state champs and have one of the state's best players in junior forward Kobi Thornton. Randolph-Clay defeated rival No. 6 Mitchell County 44-35 in the quarterfinals, after losing all three meetings with the Eagles during the regular season.
