The West Hall Spartans are one of the early surprise teams in Class AAA this season. Coach Tony Lotti's team is off to its first 3-0 start since 2008. Plus, the Spartans have yet to allow a point in its first three games, something which no other AAA team can claim. West Hall has beaten Johnson 28-0, Chestatee 31-0 and North Hall 38-0 and is mindful of the days under Tim Marchman. The Spartans went 54-51-1 in his 10 season and opened the 2002 season with two shutouts en route to a 9-2 campaign, Marchman's last. West Hall hadn't been to the playoffs since Marchman left for East Hall until 2013, Lotti's second season at the helm. The Spartans went 6-5 last season and came within a missed field goal of upsetting mighty Cartersville on the road in the first round, losing 28-26. The effort earned Lotti recognition as Hall County's Coach of the Year. This year West Hall imported new defensive coordinator Jay Reid, who played tight end at Georgia Tech from 2004-05. The defense is led by leading tackler Tyquan Statham, inside linebackers Tyrese Osborne and Cameron Millsap, and defensive back Kwon Williams. Williams and Statham are also two of the team's most dangerous weapons on offense. West Hall will face a serious test this week at North Oconee, which moved up to Class AAAA this season. The Titans are 0-2, but losses have come to state-ranked Coffee and Greater Atlanta Christian, the No. 1 team in Class AA. West Hall isn't the only surprising team in Class AAA. Here four other teams that are off to a good start. Adairsville: It isn't necessarily surprising that the Tigers are 3-0 (and now ranked No. 10 in the state) but rather how they dominated Ringgold last week. The program has been underrated and has made the playoffs the last three seasons. Quarterback Marcus Childers leads an offense that has produced 115 points. The offensive line, which returned only one starter, has been key for the Tigers, and helped them converted five fourth-down plays against Ringgold. Dodge County: The Indians started 3-0 in 2012, but lost five of their next six and limped into the playoffs. This year they've beat Bleckley County, Brantley County and Savannah and meet winless Southeast Bulloch this week. The Dodge offense is led by quarterback Landon Martin. Sonoraville: The Phoenix are 2-1 and expect to be in contention for the final playoff spot in Region 6-AAA. Playing under first-year coach Jim Kremer, Sonoraville is looking for its first trip to the postseason, but will need to rise up in a difficult league. Running back Brandon Dendy has been carrying much of the offensive load for the Phoenix and last week topped 100 yards rushing and scored twice against North Murray. Douglass: There are still miles to go before the Astros return to the form that made them one of Atlanta's perennial powers, but coach Rodney Cofield has started to make positive strides. The Astros are 2-1, a win total they had not reached since 2008. The cupcakes end with Cedar Grove this week and Blessed Trinity the next, but the Astros could conceivably reach .500 this year. Who is your surprise team? Let me know who we missed?
