Rushing for more than 200 yards is a memory of a lifetime for most high school football players.
Pepperell junior Devyn Collins ran for 246 yards in the first half alone last week against Rockmart. Then he ran for 239 in the second half.
Collins' total - 485 on 48 carries - broke a 15-year-old Georgia record for rushing yards in a game.
"It's one of those things where I wasn't even aware until well after the game," Pepperell coach Jeff Shiflett said. "It's amazing that somebody can stand up to that many carries. But he's a tough kid and gets better as the game progresses."
It helped that Pepperell's opponent, Rockmart, was matching Collins run for run, although it required two Rockmart backs - Jermonte Thompson (233 yards rushing) and J.C. Lovelace (115). Rockmart won 34-32. Both teams were scoring quickly, with several long runs, none longer than Collins' 94-yarder in the first quarter.
Collins is only 5 feet, 7 inches and 180 pounds, but he never slowed. Shiflett said he is most dangerous in space.
"He's a good vision guy," Shiflett said. "He sees the hole well and reads his blocks well, and he's quicker than you'd think."
