The Etowah girls have ended Walton’s 12-year dominance in region tennis.
The Eagles beat the Raiders in the Region 5-AAAAAA championship match on Thursday at the Fair Oaks Tennis Center to put an ended to one of the state’s most emphatic streaks of success. It was Walton’s first region tournament loss since 2003.
The decisive points came from Etowah’s No. 2 doubles team of Emily Ayers and Maddie Mewett, which gave the Eagles a 3-2 victory. It was Etowah’s second win over Walton this year.
Etowah also got wins from Nikki Gilmer and Hannah Hutchings at No. 1 doubles and Ana Albertson prevailed at No. 2 singles.
Region 4-AAAAAAA: Hillgrove won the region championship over Kennesaw Mountain when Daiki Shinoda came back from a three-game deficit in the second set to win at No. 2 singles.
Region 8-AA: Riverside Military won the boys championship by defeating Rabun County 3-1 in the final. Sibu Khoza won at No. 1 singles for the Eagles, who finished the season 11-3.

Savannah Christian claims Savannah City High School Tournament
Calvary Day’s Will Sharpe shot a 75 to take medalist honors, but Savannah Christian had three players shoot 77s to capture the team trophy at the Savannah City High School Golf Tournament at Bacon Park.
Savannah Christian’s trio of Brian Boulware, James Wohler and Nate Tosto paced the Raiders to a 314 team total and beat Savannah Country Day by 13 shots. It was the first city championship for Savannah Christian since 2008.
Savannah Country Day was led by 2015 medalist Parker Stone, who shot 78.
Benedictine, which had won the last six city titles, took third place at 339.
Savannah Arts won the girls championship, with medalist Rachel Won shooting 40 and Alivia Rukmana shooting 43. St. Vincent’s was second, with Rin Richardson shooting 47.
Region 5-AAAAA: Allatoona won the region title for the second straight year. Brooks Nixon shot 71 and defending as medalist. Allatoona shot a 327 at The Frog, with Alexander second at 341.
