Southwest DeKalb head football coach Michael Tanks remains in Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition six days after suffering a stroke at his home, DeKalb County athletics department spokesman Mark Brock confirmed Monday.
The school was expected to announce an interim head coach later today, the first that Georgia teams are allowed to work out in full pads, Brock said. Tanks was at Southwest's practice on Monday, July 25, and became ill later that day or early Tuesday.
Tanks, 48, is a Southwest DeKalb alumnus who followed the legendary Buck Godfrey as Southwest’s head coach in 2013.
Tanks played on Godfrey’s first two Southwest DeKalb teams (1983-84) as a linebacker. He went on to become an All-America center at Florida State in 1989.
Tanks’ son Michael II is a senior defensive back and punter for Southwest DeKalb. The team was 4-6 in 2015.
Before coming to Southwest DeKalb, Tanks had been an assistant coach at Tri-Cities, Banneker, Decatur and Westlake.
