Several games highlight a half-busy week for AA
Three games - two of which feature a matchup between top ranked teams - take place this week that will have huge playoff implications. While these games feature half of the state's top 10 teams, the other half are all on bye.
No. 3 GAC, No. 4 Wesleyan, No. 6 Darlington, No. 7 Pace Academy and No. 8 Jefferson County are off this week.
As for the teams that are playing:
In Region 1, No. 10 Brooks County (5-2, 3-0) travels to No. 2 Fitzgerald (6-0, 2-0).
Brooks County is coming of a 34-0 shutout over Seminole County. Fitzgerald is coming off a bye and has yet to be challenged - no team has come within three scores of the Purple Hurricanes this season.
Fitzgerald defeated Brooks County 57-29 last season.
In Region 8, No. 9 Union County 7-0, 3-0) travels to No. 5 Rabun County (6-0, 3-0).
Union County won 49-28 over Greene County last week, while Rabun County crushed Oglethorpe County, 60-12.
Rabun County won last year’s matchup 35-21. Union County hasn’t won a game in the series since 2011, the year before Rabun County coach Lee Shaw arrived.
In Region 2, No. 1 Benedictine (6-0, 3-0) goes on the road to play Vidalia (4-2, 2-1).
The Cadets haven't been tested since their season-opening, double-overtime win over No. 3 GAC. The Indians, on the other hand, are having a relative down year compared to last season, when they went 12-1 before losing to GAC in the quarterfinals.
Vidalia won last year's matchup 35-28 and own the 2-1 lead in the all-time series. However, an Indians win this year would be a huge upset and all but guarantees them catapulting into the rankings. The Cadets are a 34-point favorite, according to this week's Maxwell Projections.
