The second round of state baseball playoffs began Wednesday. Below are summaries of most of them.
A few quick highlights …
Region champions Marist and Allatoona were eliminated Thursday.
All eight Class AAAAAA series were sweeps. Region champions Brookwood, East Coweta and Lee County are out. Fourth seed South Cobb is in.
Winder-Barrow beat Region 4-AAAAA champion Northgate and is one of three Region 8-AAAAA teams in the quarterfinals. Gainesville and Loganville are the others.
No. 1 seed Savannah Christian was stunned by No. 9 Calvary Day, its Savannah rival, in Class A private. Calvary won Game 2 on a walk-off hit.
Garrett Gooden had another amazing series for St. Pius, which swept West Laurens. See St. Pius series summary below. He's been the post-season MVP so far.
Westminster's Rankin Woley was 6-for-7 with four doubles and a home run and three scoreless innings of relief in a sweep of Jefferson.
Wesleyan swept Jeff Davis and ended Game 1 with a triple play.
Zach Graveno pitched a five inning no-hitter for Lambert.
Loganville’s Mitchell Miller struck out 16 against Northside-Columbus.

R1 #2 Valdosta at R5 #1 Pope
Mason Meadows hit a three-run homer to break a 4-4 tie in Game 2. Meadows also doubled in the first inning and had five RBI. Chase Smith struck out all four batters he faced and got the save for starter Matt Rowland. Josh Lowe hit a two-run homer in Game 2. Cameron Allison pitched 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight. Lowe got the save. He had four strikeouts over two innings.
R3 #4 South Cobb at R6 #2 North Forsyth
South Cobb swept North Forsyth 2-0 and 7-6 and reached the quarterfinals as a No. 4 seed out of Region 3. In the opener, South Cobb’s Devin Lucas pitched an eight-inning shutout, allowing five hits and striking out three. Jamaal Combest and Thomas Leffew had two hits apiece. In Game 2, South Cobb trailed 5-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning but scored five times and held on. With a 6-5 in the seventh, Lucas came out of the bullpen. He allowed two hits, one a homer, but struck out two and got the save. Tanner Lescanec (6 IP, 4 ER, 8 H) was the winning pitcher. Alex Rodriguez led off the sixth with a double, and Leffew followed with a single. North Forsyth then committed two errors and walked two to hasten the demise.
R4 #2 Harrison at R8 #1 Brookwood
Harrison beat Brookwood with a pair of 5-0 victories. Ryan Parker pitched the Game 1 shutout, tossing a three-hitter. He struck out five. Ben Kewin was 3-for-4 with a double. In Game 2, Ben Brock allowed seven hits and struck out six over six innings. Harrison Coley pitched the seventh. He struck out two and didn’t allow a base runner. Kewin doubled and drove in two runs. Justin Fields, Jacob Jones and Sam Kuchinski had two hits apiece.
R7 #2 Collins Hill at R3 #1 East Coweta
Collins Hill swept East Coweta 3-0 and 7-3. In the opener, Collins Hill’s Riley King took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He then allowed a single and a walk and was replaced by Cole Zabowski, who struck out three straight batters to seal the victory. King had eight strikeouts, and at the plate had two singles. Nasim Nunez was 2-for-3 with a triple. In the second game, Collins Hill trailed 3-0 until a five-run sixth inning. Spencer Douches (5 IP, 3 ER, 5 SO) was the winning pitcher. Jordan Adcox struck out three in two hitless innings of relief. Leadoff batter William Holland was 2-for-2 with a walk, a HBP, a stolen base and two runs scored.
R5 #2 Walton at R1 #1 Lee County
Walton beat Region 1 champion Lee County 9-2 and 6-1. Walton won the opener after taking a 6-0 lead in two innings. The Raiders had 10 hits, all singles, two apiece from Jason Rooks, Michael Guldberg, Ben Spencer and Chandler Miller. Zac Kristofak pitched six innings, allowing one earned run, and struck out seven. He allowed only one hit, though issued five walks. Luke Bartnicki pitched the seventh and struck out two. In Game 2, Chris Hummel allowed only four hits across six innings. Rooks and Miller had two more hits apiece. Parker McCoy and Drake Frix also had two hits apiece.
R2 #2 Lakeside-DeKalb at R6 #1 Lambert
Zach Graveno pitched a five inning no-hitter in Game 2, a 10-0 victory that gave Lambert a sweep. Only two Lakeside hitters reached base, both hit by pitches. Lambert's Jarrett Wright was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Lambert used 16 players in the clincher. In the opener, Kyle McCann (2-for-3) hit a two-run homer to right field in the first inning of a 2-1 victory, and that was enough for Cole Varner (5 IP, 1 R, 5 SO, 2 hits), Hunter Furlong (1 IP) and Alex Todd (1 IP), who combined on a three-hitter.
R1 #4 Colquitt County at R5 #3 Etowah
Etowah swept Colquitt County 6-0 and 5-0. In Game 1, Andrew Keene hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. Drew Walters was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Nick Bartosz and Brandon Marcus also had two hits. Bryce O’Brien pitched the eight-inning shutout on a four-hitter. He had five strikeouts. In Game 2, Keene was 3-for-4 with a double. Tyler Adams was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Sawyer Gibson-Long (5 IP, 3 H, 9 SO), Keene (1 IP, 0 H) and Brian Peet (1 IP, 0 H) combined on the three-hit shutout.
R3 #2 Newnan at R7 #1 Norcross
Norcross swept Newnan 3-2 and 11-2. In the opener, Cooper Stinson struck out 11 batters over six innings and allowed two runs and four hits. Rolando Heredia pitched a hitless seventh inning for the save. Devin Mayfield was 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. Patrick Hutton had two hits, one a double. In Game 2, Walsh was 3-for-3.

R1 #2 Columbus at R5 #1 Allatoona
Columbus completed a sweep of Allatoona with a 3-2 victory Thursday, winning on a bases-loaded infield hit to second base in the bottom of the eighth inning by Dawson Weaver. It scored Cason Greathouse, who opened the frame with a single to right. Jonathan Brand pitched an eight-inning complete game. He allowed 10 hits but stranded 10 runners. In the opener Wednesday, Columbus blew a 7-2 lead but won 9-7 with two runs in the top of the 10th inning. Jackson Mellenburg was 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Trent Grantham had two hits, a double and two RBI and pitched the final 3 ½ innings – scoreless – for the victory. Blake Hicks was 3-for-6 with a double. No report yet on Game 2.
R7 #3 Cambridge at R2 #1 Houston County
Cambridge and Houston County split. Cambridge won the opener 2-0. The game was scoreless until the top of the seven, when Cambridge rallied after starting the inning with consecutive strikeouts. Bradley Wiedman’s single to center field scored the first run. The second scored on a bases-loaded walk. Austin Weiermiller pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 11. He allowed no walks. Houston County won 11-1 in Game 2, breaking things open with a seven-run fifth inning and winning by run rule. Tanner Hall was 3-for-3 at the plate and pitched five innings, strike out seven and allowing only two hits. Tony Locey and Austin Langford also were 3-for-3.
R1 #3 LaGrange at R8 #1 Gainesville
Gainesville swept Lagrange 6-3 and 2-1 despite being out-hit 23-10 in the two games. In Game 1, LaGrange’s hit advantage was 14-5, but the Grangers stranded 14. Sam Carpenter homered and was the winning pitcher. He struck out none and allowed nine hits and two walks but only three runs. Fredrick Cardona was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Gainesville, the Region 8 champion. In Game 2, Anthony Carrera hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Collier Scott (3.1 IP) and Jack Langford (3.2 IP) allowed eight hits and three walks but only one run.
R2 #4 Evans at R7 #2 Dalton
Dalton and Evans split, each winning big. Dalton won 8-1 as Cole Shelton was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and was the winning pitcher with a four-hitter. He allowed no earned runs and struck out four. Brooks Nelson had two hits, and JP Tighe had a two-run double. Evans won the opener 12-2 in a game that was 2-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning. Evans scored four in the fifth and six in the sixth. Parker Stokes hit two home runs and drove in five runs. Levin Lackey was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Hunter Rachels had two doubles. Austin Shead was 2-for-3 with two doubles. A.J. Allen pithed a six-inning complete game. He struck out seven and allowed three hits and just one earned run.
R8 #3 Loganville at R1 #1 Northside-Columbus
Loganville swept Region 1 champion Northside-Columbus 3-2 and 4-1. In the opener, Mitchell Miller struck out 16 and allowed four hits. Both Northside runs were unearned. In Game 2, Loganville's Ryan English (5 IP, 3 H, 6 SO) and Drew Franklin (2 IP, 0 H, 4 SO) combined on a three-hitter with 10 strikeout. Northside's run was unearned.

Kell swept Greenbrier 5-2, 6-1.
R8 #2 Winder-Barrow at R4 #1 Northgate
Winder-Barrow swept Region 4 champion Northgate 7-1 and 10-8. In the opener, Winder-Barrow scored in each of the first four innings and banged out 12 hits. Pat Demarco was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Beau Hannah was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. (Darrell Woodall was 2-for-3. Treat Maddox was 2-for-4. ) Will Hardigree allowed six hits in the complete game. In Game 2, Hardigree was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Treat Maddox was 4-for-7 in the series.
R3 #2 South Effingham at R7 #1 Forsyth Central
D.L. Hall pitched a one-hitter (allowing a single vs. the game’s leadoff batter) with 10 strikeouts to lead Houston County to a 2-0 victory over Cambridge in Game 3 on Thursday. Tony Locey hit a two-run homer in the second inning. Cambridge and Houston County split Wednesday. Cambridge won the opener 2-0. R6 #2 St. Pius at R2 #1 West Laurens
Pitcher/infielder Garrett Gooden had another remarkable series as St. Pius swept Region 2 champion West Laurens 7-6 and 8-4. In the opener, Gooden hit two home runs, one to lead off the eighth inning that stood as the game winner. St. Pius overcame four errors, which led to four unearned runs. Kennet Sorenson was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Andrew Robertson pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run. Andrew Rochefort pitched the bottom of the eighth for the save. In Game 2, Gooden hit another home run, went 2-for-3 with three RBI and was the complete-game winning pitcher. He struck out 11 and earned a three-hitter. Only two of his Gooden’s runs allowed were earned.
R1 #3 Bainbridge at R8 #1 Buford
Buford swept Bainbridge 15-0 and 16-2 to extend the Wolves’ winning streak to 12. In the opener, Justin Glover threw a four-inning no-hitter and struck out eight. The game ended with Glover was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning, providing a 15-run lead and invoking the run rule. Dillon Lancaster was 3-for-3 and scored three runs. Austin Wilhite homered. In Game 2, Griffin Jollif pitched a five-inning one-hitter and struck out three. (Jollif tripled in Game 1, while Glover homered in Game 2.)
R7 #2 Cartersville at R3 #1 Thomson
Cartersville swept Region 3 champion Thomson 6-4 and 13-3. In the opener, Devin Warner was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Spencer Dickey also homered. Elliott Anderson pitched a complete game and struck out 13 while allowing nine hits and three runs, all in the bottom of the seventh, after Cartersville held a 13-0 lead. At the plate, Anderson was 2-for-2 with a double. Chris McNulty walked three times, scored two runs and went 1-for-1 with a double. In Game 2, Parker Tidwell was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Anthony Seigler (7 IP, 8 H, 8 SO, 3 ER) was the winning pitcher.
R5 #2 Woodward Academy at R1 #1 Thomas County Central
Woodward Academy swept Thomas County Central. In the opener, a 5-1 Woodward victory, Luke Corbin pitched six scoreless innings, struck out 11 and allowed four hits. Woodward scored four unearned runs in the top of the six inning after getting three singles but also reaching on error three times. Ethan Cornelius, Jack Fleming and Hunter Falconer had two hits apiece. Cornelius tripled. In Game 2, a 7-6 win, Woodward took a 6-1 lead and held on. Nate Stinson was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Payton Christensen was 2-for-2. Christian Bunting allowed only three hits and two runs, both unearned, over five innings and got the win.
R2 #2 Veterans at R6 #1 Marist
Veterans defeated Region 6 champion Marist 2-1 on Thursday in the deciding Game 3. The game was 1-1 entering the seventh inning, when Veterans reached on error and later scored on error. Marist got a leadoff double by Will Goldberg to start the bottom of the inning. He was sacrificed to third but stranded after two popups. Veterans’ Kyle Parry threw a complete-game six hitter. On Wednesday, Veterans won the opener 11-6. Leyton Pickney’s three-run homer was part of a four-run first inning for the Warhawks. Marist tied the game 4-4 in the fourth inning, but Veterans pulled away. Gabe Holt’s two-run homer was the key shot in a four-run sixth. Marist used six pitchers. In Game 2, Duke signee Coleman Williams held Veterans scoreless over six innings despite allowing nine hits and three walks. Veterans stranded 12 runners. Joseph Mannelly, who struggled in Game 1 on the mound, hit a grand slam in the sixth inning. Will Toner and Bill Rubright had three hits apiece.
R8 #2 North Hall at R4 #1 Locust Grove
Locust Grove survived Game 3 with a 7-3 victory after trailing 3-2 entering the seventh inning, when Locust Grove put up five runs, all unearned, as North Hall made three errors. Odlanier Rodriguez pitched six innings, allowed two earned runs, hit a double and drove in three. The teams split on Wednesday. In Game 1, a 4-1 North Hall victory, Reese Olson pitched six innings, allowing one run on no walks and six hits. Jake Chester was 2-for-3 with a double. In Game 2, Locust Grove won 9-1, breaking oen a 1-0 game with a four-run fourth inning. Trevor Sellers (2-for-4), Gavin Lee (2-for-3, double), Clay Shearouse (3-for-4, triple) and Will Dyar (2-for-3, two RBI) had big nights hitting. Christian Young pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts and didn’t allow an earned run.

Cedartown swept Decatur 5-2, 13-8. In Game 1, Casey Newsome was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Cedartown’s 5-2 victory. Dalton Prince was the winning pitcher. He pitched six innings and allowed one earned run and six hits. Cedartown had a pair of five-running innings in Game 2. Zonterious Scofield was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two walks. He doubled twice. Brayden McCollum was 2-for-3 with a double.

Jackson won 4-2. Calhoun won 12-1.
R4 #2 Westminster at R8 #1 Jefferson
Westminster beat Jefferson 11-4 and 9-1 in a series that finished after midnight because of a rain delay. In Game 1, Rankin Woley was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run. He had three RBI and three runs. Kenneth Hartzfeld pitched a complete-game four-hitter with only one earned run allowed. He was 3-for-4 at the plate. Woley then went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with two more doubles and pitched three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts. Blake Huber pitched four innings, allowing no earned runs, and struck out five. Will Benson was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Ethan Price was 2-for-3 with a home run.

R1 #2 Thomasville at R5 #1 Bowdon
Bowdon defeated Thomasville 12-1 in Game 3 on Thursday. Cy Horton was 3-for-3. Matt Greshman was 2-for-4 with two homers and six RBI. Reed Robinson was 3-for-4 and was the winning pitcher in the five-inning run-rule game. Bowdon and Thomasville split Wednesday. Thomasville won 8-3 as Matthew Green went 3-for-4, and Chapman O’Quinn homered. Hayden Donaldson and Austin Clark had two hits apiece. Bayley Wright allowed no earned runs in a complete-game three-hitter. In Game 2, an 8-6 Bowdon win, Bowdon came from 6-1 down and took an 8-6 lead with a four-run sixth inning. Reed Robinson was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Coleton Pitcock and Matt Greshman had two hits apiece, and Curt Eidson homered. Justin Ingle pitched six innings, allowing six runs, only two earned.
R6 #2 Greater Atlanta Christian at R2 #1 Benedictine
Greater Atlanta Christian defeated Region 2 champion Benedictine 8-5 on Thursday in the deciding Game 3. Harrison Sloan was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Zack Savage was 2-for-2 with a home run. Gabe Davenport, the Game 1 winner, got the final five outs in order. On Tuesday, Benedictine won the opener 15-2 in a five-inning run-rule affair. Chase Marini was 3-or-3 with three runs and two RBI and a double. Chipper Wiley was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Adam King allowed one earned run in five innings. In Game 2, GAC won 4-3, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on a passed ball. Savage and Davenport each had two hits for GAC. Trent Fowler, courtesy-running for Davenport, scored two runs, including the game-winner. Davenport pitched the full seven innings. He allowed three runs, eight hits, a walk and a home run to Chase Marini. Philip Moore was 3-for-4 for Benedictine.

Wesleyan swept Jeff Davis In a series highlighted by a triple play to end Game 1. Wesleyan led 7-5, and Jeff Davis had runners at first and second. Jordan Dubberly lined out to Wesleyan second baseman Drew Aspinwall, who touched second base for the second out, then threw to first. Colin Hall was 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Michael Payne and Jake McCleskey had two hits apiece. Jordan Ward pitched all seven innings. He allowed nine hits and four earned runs. In Game 2, Wesleyan won 10-4. Cole Mannion had five RBI.
R5 #3 Heard County at R4 #1 Lamar County
Heard County, a team that was 13-13 in the regular season, completed a sweep of Region 4 champ Lamar County on Thursday with a 9-4 win. Tristan Brown and Logan Ward each had two hits, one a double. #4 pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief to shut the door. In Game 1, Heard County took an 8-0 lead through four innings and held, winning 8-4. Lee Kay, Ethan Brant and Chandler Polke had two hits apiece. Brant homered. (He tripled in Game 2.) Kay and Polk doubled. Kay also was the winning pitcher. He threw six innings, struck out seven and allowed only one earned run and five hits.
R6 #4 Holy Innocents' at R3 #2 Harlem
Holy Innocents’ and Harlem split. HI won the opener 4-3, coming from 3-1 down in the top of the seventh inning. Alfredo Granier hit a two-run double. Alexander Bryant’s single drove in the winning run. Granier got out of a bases-loaded one-out mess in the bottom of the seventh. Harlem won 2-1 in Game 2 behind Dylan Mosley’s two-hitter. Mosley struck out the final two batters with two HI base-runners in the seventh. The teams will play today at 5 p.m.

#9 Calvary Day at #1 Savannah Christian
Calvary Day upset No. 1 seed Savannah Christian 3-1 and 5-4. Calvary Day scored all three of its Game 1 runs in the first inning – all unearned and scoring on an error with the bases loaded. Tristan Triplett and Rudy Amaya each had two hits. Bryson Smeltzer allowed one run and five hits and struck out four in a complete-game victory. In Game 2, Calvary Day won on Triplett’s walk-off single to left that scored Harrison Bocock. Triplett had four hits in the series. Amaya (3 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 SO) got the win in relief.
#5 ELCA at #4 Tattnall Square
Tattnall Square, the No. 4 seed, beat No. 5 Eagle’s Landing Christian 2-0 and 4-1. In Game 1, Cory Bartholomew pitched a one-hit shutout and also singled and scored a run in the 2-0 opening victory. Both of Tattnall’s runs were unearned off Ganopulos, who struck out nine and allowed just four hits in 5 1/3 innings. In Game 2, Tattnall broke open a 1-0 game with a three-run seventh inning and out-hit ELCA 10-3. Logan Simmons was 3-for-4. Bartholomew was 2-for-3 with a double. Garrett Houston was the winning pitcher. He allowed three hits and struck out six and walked only one.
#6 Hebron Christian at #3 George Walton
Spence Johns pitched a three-hit shout out with six strikeouts Thursday as Hebron Christian beat George Walton Academy 4-0 in Game 3. Johns also was 2-for-4 with a double. Steven Casey had a two-run double in a three-run seventh inning. On Wednesday, Hebron Christian and George Walton Academy split. Hebron won the opener 11-9. Caleb Martin, Luke Crawford and Tyler Calvert hit home runs for Hebron. Sloan Bennett was 3-for-4 with a triple. George Walton won 6-1 after breaking open a scoreless game with a five-run fifth inning. Christian Shiver pitched a three hitter and allowed just one run despite 10 walks. Brennan Carter was 3-for-4. Ty Buice and Brooks Barrineau each went 2-for-3 with a double.
#7 Mt. Pisgah at #2 King's Ridge
Kings Ridge swept Mount Pisgah 4-3 and 4-1. In the opener, Kyle Brnovich was 2-for-3 with a double. Cullen Monette was 2-for-4 with two RBI. In Game 2, Fraser Ellard pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11. Will Janofsky homered and was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the series. Trey Parker was 2-for-3 with a double.

#8 Taylor County at #1 Schley County
Schley County eliminated Taylor County with 4-0 and 17-1 victories. Blake Howell pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener. He struck out nine and walked none. Brett Usry was 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double, three RBI and three runs scored. In Game 2, Usry walked in all four plate appearances and was the starting and winning pitcher, allowing one run in three innings. Chase Patrick (2-for-3, three runs), Will Barry (3-for-4, three runs) and Wade Law (3-for-4, five RBI) all homered.

Treutlen beat Irwin County 12-2 and 10-1. Zach Hughes was the Game 1 winner. He allowed two runs over five innings in the run-rule game. Bryson Wilcher was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. In Game 2, Tyler Cone struck out 15 batters and pitched a two-hitter. His only run allowed was a home run by Tyler Soliday, Irwin County’s starting pitcher. Cone also homered, went 2-for-5, scored three runs and drove in four. Tyler Benjamin was 3-for-4 with a double and four runs scored.
#6 Trion at #3 Baconton Charter
Trion swept Baconton Charter, winning 7-4 and 10-0. Gabe Howell was 2-for-3 with a home run and pitched two scorless innings of relief in Game 1. Malik Martin also had two hits. In Game 2, Evan Walker pitched a five-inning four-hitter and struck out six. He walked none. Howell was 3-for-3 (making him 5-for-6 in the series) and a double and a triple (giving him a cycle for the series). Walker was 3-for-3 with a double. Jarrett Pierce was 2-for-3 with a triple.
#7 Emanuel County Institute at #2 Charlton County
Charlton County beat ECI 10-2 and 4-2. Austin Knowles was the winning pitcher in Game 1. He allowed only one earned run in the five-hitter with eight strikeouts. Knowles also was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Tyler Chesser, Jack Gowen and Pete Chesser also had two hits apiece. In Game 2, Gowen homered and had two hits again and was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs (both unearned) over six innings. CHesser got the save. Knowles was 2-for-3.
