Region tournaments begin today (Monday) in regions 7 and 8 and resume in 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Congratulations to Tift County’s boys and Lowndes’ girls for winning Region 1 last weekend.

Also congrats to South Cobb’s boys, who had the most amazing finish to a region tournament game Saturday. A No. 9 seed from Region 4, they beat Kennesaw Mountain 59-58 with a half-court buzzer-beater by Malique Johnson, who scored 21 points. Johnson is a senior, and his shot earned him at least one more high school basketball game.

(South Cobb followed that with an upset of 20-6 McEachern on Monday and made the state playoffs at 8-19.)

Below are the state tournament draws. Those will be filled in as teams qualify for the state playoffs.

Meanwhile, here’s a quick look at each region tournament. See the drop-down menus for up-to-date scores and schedules for each, or click on the links below.

Region 1Finished. The victory by Lowndes' girls was a surprise. They were seeded No. 3.

Region 2The semifinals are today at Newton. Rockdale's boys (11-15) upset Morrow (13-14) after losing to Morrow twice during the regular season. Alcovy's girls (9-17) also qualified for the state tournament as a No. 5 seed. Their streak of four straight state-playoff berths had been in jeopardy.

Region 3 – The semifinals are Monday at Tri-Cities. Newnan's girls upset arch-rival East Coweta 46-44 in a 4-5 game that determined a state playoff berth. Otherwise, the higher seeds have won.

Region 4 – Despite Saturday's heroics, South Cobb's boys must win again (vs. McEachern on Monday) to make the state playoffs. The quarterfinals are Monday at McEachern in a tournament that will run through Wednesday.

Region 5 – Cherokee's boys will be one of the better teams sitting at home for the state tournament. They'd started 13-3 and had two victories over Top 10 region rival Milton, but lost Saturday to fifth-seeded Etowah (15-11) 45-40 on Saturday. Lassiter's girls (11-15) also have qualified. They beat third-seeded Etowah (13-13) 48-46. The semifinals resume Monday at Etowah.

Region 6 – There were two upsets on Saturday in the quarters at West Forsyth. No. 6 Chattahoochee (10-16) beat No. 3 Centennial 64-54, and No. 5 Johns Creek (13-13) beat No. 4 West Forsyth 54-49.

Region 7 – The tournament gets underway with eight games Monday at Collins Hill and Norcross.

Region 8 – The tournament gets underway with eight games Monday at Berkmar and Brookwood.
