Here’s where we find out if the No. 7 Pace Academy Knights are for real.
They got off to their best start in program history before losing two weeks ago to Wesleyan. Now they take on the No. 3 GAC Spartans, who, on the other hand, are rolling. The Spartans' only loss was to the state’s top-ranked team, Benedictine - a defeat they suffered on the road in double overtime.
Pace enjoyed a bye last week. The Spartans won 37-7 last season in the first-ever matchup between the two Region 6 programs.
Another matchup to pay attention to is No. 8 Jefferson County at Metter in Region 3.
Jefferson County is a two-loss team, but the Warriors have earned their spot, having beat two formerly ranked teams in Screven County and Dublin. The Metter Tigers are also knocking on the door to get inside the top 10, having beat Dublin as well.
The Tigers have never beaten the Warriors and are 0-3 in the all-time series, which began in 2006.
Top-ranked Benedictine appears to have an intriguing matchup against the Jeff Davis Yellow Jackets. At 4-1, the Jackets already have as many wins as any of their previous three seasons. However, the Cadets won 42-0 last season and own the all-time series at 5-0.
No. 6 Darlington is the only other ranked team to play an opponent that has a winning record, facing Dade County.
No. 5 Rabun County takes on a winless Oglethorpe County team; No. 9 Union County goes against 3-3 Greene County; No. 10 Brooks County faces 1-4 Seminole County.
No. 2 Fitzgerald enjoys a bye this week.
