Notable results of week 4: Washington-Wilkes loses lofty spot in rankings

GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable results of the weekend:

1. Jefferson County 14, Washington-Wilkes 7: Washington-Wilkes fell out of the Class AA rankings from the No. 2 spot after losing to a team that came in 0-2, although both losses were against higher-classification teams. Washington-Wilkes remains the favorite to win Region 8-AA, which has just one other team with a winning record (3-0 Union County).

2. Roswell 27, Walton 15: Walton was beginning to look like one of the favorites in 5-AAAAA after a 3-0 start that included a 59-16 victory against defending champion Lassiter last week. However, the loss to Roswell (4-6 last year) puts both teams in the middle of a wide-open playoff race that is likely to include Milton, Etowah, Woodstock and Cherokee.

3. Lanier 27, Flowery Branch 12: Lanier, a Gwinnett County school playing its third full varsity season, continues to make a splash in its first year in AAAAA. The Longhorns improved to 2-0 in Region 8 (3-0 overall), with victories against two teams (Flowery Branch, Clarke Central) that have represented the region in the playoffs the past four seasons.

4. Adairsville 35, Ringgold 0: Adairsville opened the season 2-0 but lacked a signature victory. The Tigers have one now after routing the team that was ranked seventh in Class AAA last week and establishing themselves as the top challenger to No. 2 Calhoun in 6-AAA. Adairsville, which lost to Ringgold 38-20 last season, plays at Calhoun on Oct. 3.

5. Westside (Augusta) 40, Lincoln County 7: Lincoln County was considered a 17-point favorite by the computer Maxwell Ratings in this game against a Class AAA school that was 0-2-1 in its first three games. But Lincoln County lost and lost big - it was the Red Devils' worst loss since 1972, when Aquinas beat them 45-0. Lincoln County is 1-2.

6. Loganville 13, Heritage (Conyers) 6: Heritage's streak of four consecutive playoff appearances seems to be in serious jeopardy. The Patriots, who are 0-3 overall for the first time since 2005, are 0-2 in Region 8-AAAAA, with games against Flowery Branch, Gainesville, Lanier and Clarke Central coming up in the next seven weeks.

7. Woodland (Stockbridge) 23, Northgate 14: Woodland improved to 4-0 for the first time in school history with a 4-AAAAA crossover victory against the team projected by Maxwell as the preseason favorite to win the subregion A title. Woodland, which played its first full season in 2008, has matched its victory total from the past two seasons combined.

8. Northview 49, North Forsyth 0: Northview, which returned to the highest classification this season after two years in AAAAA, is 3-0 for the first time in school history after posting its second consecutive shutout. The Titans, who were projected as four-point favorites by the Maxwell Ratings, have outscored their opponents 132-7 in three games.

9. Woodstock 51, Lassiter 42: Lassiter won the past two region titles in 5-AAAAAA, but the Trojans are 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the region after losing for the second consecutive season to Woodstock, which handed them their only region loss in 2013. Lassiter is giving up 49.8 points per game this season and has allowed at least 42 points in every game.

10. Westlake at Newton, canceled: Newton was looking to go 3-0 and led 8-0 late in the first quarter when the game was called because of lightning. It was the second consecutive game that was lost to weather issues for Newton, which will now play just eight games. The Rams travel to Lowndes this week without having played a full game since Aug. 29.
