GHSF Daily's Chip Saye ranks the most surprising and notable games of the weekend:
1. Arabia Mountain 24, Dacula 21: Any questions concerning Arabia Mountain's legitimacy, despite its hot start, have been answered. The Rams improved to 4-0 for the first time with a victory against a Dacula team that has spent much of the season in the Class AAAAAA top 10. The computer Maxwell Ratings had projected Dacula as a 24-point favorite.
2. Glynn Academy 56, Camden County 7: Glynn Academy's win wasn't a big surprise, but the margin of victory was shocking. The loss was Camden's worst since a 58-6 loss to Appling County in 1988, and the Wildcats fell to 0-3 for the first time since 1969 (not including forfeits). Glynn Academy has three consecutive solid wins after a loss to Benedictine.
3. Newton 34, Peachtree Ridge 32: Newton showed it will be ready to compete in its new predominantly Gwinnett region by beating one of the county's better programs over the past decade. The Rams will face Gwinnett teams South Gwinnett, Archer, Grayson and Shiloh in region play, starting on Sept. 30. Maxwell projected Peachtree Ridge as a 12-point favorite.
4. Stewart County 40, Glascock County 22: Class A school Stewart County snapped a 32-game losing streak, the state's longest active slump. It was the Royal Knights' first victory since beating Calhoun County 12-6 in the final game of the 2012 season. Stewart County, with an enrollment of 124 students, is the smallest football-playing school in the state.
5. Bremen 40, Trion 7: Bremen avoided its second consecutive 0-3 start by rolling past a Trion team that came in undefeated, ranked No. 10 in Class A public and a 13-point favorite, according to the Maxwell Ratings. Although the teams hadn't met since 2011, the victory was the ninth straight for Bremen in the series, which it leads 21-18-2.
Also of note: Alexander scored the most points in a game in school history when it routed South Paulding 69-7. Alexander's previous record was 51 points, set it 1997. South Paulding (9-3 in 2015) is 0-3 and has been outscored 134-16. ... Centennial got off on the right foot in 7-AAAAAA when it beat Alpharetta 31-30, its second consecutive win in the series after five straight losses. Alpharetta, the region's preseason favorite in the Maxwell Ratings, was a 10-point favorite. ... Cross Creek, which was 1-9 each of the past two seasons, improved to 3-1 with a 33-0 victory over Westside of Augusta. The Razorbacks haven't had a winning record or reached the playoffs since 2007. ...Discovery, playing its first varsity season, picked up the first win in program history when it beat Apalachee 27-10. Discovery had been outscored 118-13 in season-opening losses to Jefferson, Cedar Shoals and Pinecrest Academy. ... First Presbyterian's 56-0 victory over Hawkinsville was the Red Devils' worst loss since a 62-0 game against Fitzgerald in 2009. First Presbyterian is 3-0 for just the second time in seven seasons since moving from the Georgia Independent School Association.
