Peter Bertran of North Oconee made a successful Davis Cup debut. Bertran was playing for the Dominican Republic and defeated Robert Farah of Colombia 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Bertran was born in the Dominican Republic, but attends North Oconee High. He is rated as the No. 5 prospect in the state. In 2013 he won ITF tournaments in the Dominican Republic, Aruba and Barbados. He has a career-best ITF singles ranking of 112 and has a 44-19 record on that circuit.
Boys tennis: Spalding won the Region 4-AAAA championship for the third straight season by beating Eagle's Landing 3-2 in the final. The Jaguars got wins from Andrew Winter at No. 2 singles, Barrett Lavender at No. 3 singles, and the No. 2 doubles team of Luke Barlow and Benjamin Parker. Griffin, led by Randy Chastain at No. 1 singles, beat Dutchtown 4-1 in the third-place match to earn its first trip to the state playoffs since 2000. … Miller County won the Class A Public Area 3 title by beating Baconton Charter. Seminole County beat Mitchell County for third place.
Girls tennis: Baconton wins Area 3 crown
Baconton, the defending state champion, won the Class A Public Area 3 title with a win over Seminole County. … Eagle’s Landing won the Region 4-AAAA title with a 4-1 win over Spalding. Upson-Lee defeated Griffin for third place.
Boys golf: Beisel, S. Effingham win Under Armour title
Gus Beisel, a junior from Savannah Arts, won the Benedictine Under Armour Invitational at the Savannah Golf Club. Beisel shot a 2-under 70 and finished three shots ahead of South Effingham’s Ben Brennan. South Effingham also counted a 75 from Harrison Stafford, an 80 from Christian Parker and an 81 from Tyler Sheppard to with the team title with a 309. Glynn Academy got a 76 from Glynn Blount, a 77 from Gus Wilson and a 79 from Lane Jowers to shoot a 312. Benedictine was third at 317.
Girls golf: Woodward wins St. Pius Par 3 Tournament
Woodward Academy won the 15-team St. Pius Par 3 Tournament at the Peachtree Family Golf Center. Milton and Blessed Trinity tied for second, with Milton winning on a scorecard playoff.
