Alterique Gilbert of Miller Grove is the Gatorade Georgia boys basketball player of the year.

Gilbert, a point guard who has signed with Connecticut, averaged 21.1 points and 6.1 assists while shooting better than 50 percent from 3-point range on a 30-2 team that won the Class AAAAA championship.

Gilbert has been a key figure on three Miller Grove state-championship teams.

Gilbert is rated as the nation’s No. 28 recruit in the Class of 2016 by ESPN and helped Miller Grove to a No. 17 ranking in the USA TODAY Super 25 Expert Rankings. He has a 3.67 GPA .

Gilbert  joins recent Gatorade Georgia boys basketball players of the year Jaylen Brown (2015, Wheeler), Isaiah Wilkins (2014, Greater Atlanta Christian), Brannen Greene (2013, Tift County), Tony Parker (2012, Miller Grove), Shannon Scott (2011, Milton), Ryan Harrow (2010, Walton), Derrick Favors (2009 & 2008, South Atlanta), and Gani Lawal (2007, Norcross) among the state's list of former award winners.

The Gatorade Georgia girls player of the year, announced last week, is Jenna Staiti of West Forsyth.
