A memorial service for former Woodward Academy wrestling and football coach Johnny Stallings will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Woodward Academy Main Gymnasium. Visitation with the family will be held in the adjacent Tyler Brown Student Center from 2 to 3 p.m.
Stallings, a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Georgia Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame and the Macon Sports Hall of Fame, died in Macon on June 6. He was 83.
Stallings was Woodward’s head football coach from 1988 to 1997. His teams were 83-32 and won region titles in 1996 and 1997.
Stallings found even greater success in wrestling, where he had had over 150 dual-match victories and coached three state championship teams. Eighteen of his wrestlers won individual state titles. Stallings was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003.
Stallings, a graduate of Lanier High in Macon who earned a football scholarship to South Carolina in the 1950s, also coached golf and track and field and had over 300 team victories in all sports. He coached at Willingham High in Macon for eight years and at Woodward for 32. He was an assistant coach at Piedmont Academy for a year years after retirement.
