Mays’ B.J. Phillips passed for 306 yards and five touchdowns as the No. 4 Raiders throttled region foe Creekside 41-21 before its homecoming crowd Friday night in the Region 6-AAAAA Division B opener for both teams.
Three of Phillips’ touchdowns went to senior receiver Randrecous Davis, who also tossed a touchdown to Phillips on the opening play of the second half. Davis caught eight of Phillips’ passes for 138 yards.
On the opening possession, Creekside receiver Khalil McClain attempted a reverse pass and his intended receiver slipped, allowing an uncontested interception by Devon Smith at the 50. He returned the ball to the Creekside 41, where Mays scored three plays later to go ahead 7-0 two minutes in when quarterback B.J. Phillips hit Santonio Mapp for a 24-yard pass.
Phillips, a junior who has thrown for over 1,150 yards through five games, hit Norman Price for a 60-yard touchdown pass to put Mays ahead 13-0 midway through the first quarter. Phillips finished 19-of-29 passing with one interception. Mays passed for 369 yards overall.
Creekside missed a scoring opportunity late in the first quarter when Francisco Alejandre missed a 24-yard field goal, ending a 14-play drive. Mays took over at the 20 and drove 80 yards for another score, when Phillips threw his third touchdown pass of the first half to Georgia commit Randrecous Davis early in the second quarter. Davis beat a defender for a 32-yard score to give Mays a 19-0 lead with 10:43 to play before halftime.
Creekside made good on its second scoring opportunity when quarterback Felix Harper found McClain on a fourth-down pass with 1:25 to play before halftime. The 77-yard drive was sustained by a 51-yard pass from Harper to Kelvin Freeman that moved the Seminoles inside the 10. Harper finished the game 11-of-21 passing for 202 yards. He tossed three touchdowns and three interceptions after halftime.
Phillips connected with Davis for his fourth touchdown pass of the first half with 19 seconds to play before halftime. Mays (6-0) avenged a 13-7 loss at Creekside last season.
