The Maxwell Ratings will rank Georgia's 417 teams throughout the 2015 season. The ratings are based entirely on historical performance and on field results and do not consider personnel changes on the roster or coaching staffs.
Interesting results from this past week:
- Turner County blew past the previous top Class A public school, Charlton County, by a score of 44-0 to jump nearly 10 points in the ratings. First year coach Ben Simmons has guided the Rebels to a 5-0 start, which is only one win away from tying their most in a season over the past seven years.
- Washington County, the top team in Class AAA entering the season, notched their first win of the season with a 54-0 victory over winless Glenn Hills. After losing only state championship games for the last two years, the Golden Hawks have four losses on the season while their rating is more than five touchdowns lower than their preseason rating.
- Roswell should be keeping an eye on two different games this weekend to improve their rating. The first is their 5-AAAAAA showdown with undefeated Walton but they should also be watching the scoreboard for Colquitt County's game with Lowndes. If the Hornets are victorious and the Vikings can upend the Packers, look for Roswell to enjoy a significant boost.
Maxwell GHSA Football Ratings
As this season's games are played, the Maxwell Ratings will be based on a modified logistic regression of the current football season's results in combination with each team's historical performance. More recent games and games against similarly rated opponents carry more weight and the weight of each team's historical performance diminishes as the team's season progresses.
The current total weight of all team's historical performance is 20.86%.
For the current season, the ratings accurately account for the winner of 886 of 955 total games including 1 tie(s) (92.83%) and accurately reflect approximately 68.3% of all game margins within 12.57 points.
The ratings are scaled so that 100.00 is the rating required to win 91.5% of all games in an infinite round robin tournament against all teams in the highest classification. The schedule strength is the rating required to win 50% of all games in an infinite round robin tournament against a particular team's opponents.
