On Thursday, we looked at the No. 1 teams in AAAA (Locust Grove), AAA (Blessed Trinity) and AA (Wesleyan).
Here are three more No. 1 teams, each hoping to keep its top ranking another week.
AAAAAA – Milton's ranking might not hold this week after an 11-1 loss to Pope, but the Eagles remain a strong team that should only improve given its youth. Two or three freshmen and two or three sophomores start each game. ''We have never been so young, but I am certainly proud of our guys and how they compete each day,'' coach Joey Ray said. "We have a long way to go, but if we can just keep getting better every day we will put ourselves in a position to be where we want at the end of the season.'' Senior first baseman Brett Centracchio (.440) is a team leader. He has signed with Davidson. Infielder Steven Curry, a Georgia Southern signee, is hitting .417. The rotation is sophomore Joshua Germany (0.00 ERA), junior Milan Sutaria (2.93) and Ian Concevitch (2.80).
AAAAA – Gainesville (7-2) was the 2015 runner-up and lost lost big-name players such as catcher Michael Curry (signed with Georgia) and first baseman Caleb Whitenton (South Carolina). But left-hander Jonathan Gettys (LSU) is back along with another lefty, Sam Carpenter, who missed 2015 with an injury. Gettys has struck out 43 batters in 17 innings. He's allowed eight hits and two earned runs. Carpenter has a 2.25 ERA but is even more outstanding at the plate, where he's hitting .469 (15-for-32) with six doubles. The team is hitting .328. Other top hitters include Farris Mance (.400), Fredrick Cardona (.346), Collier Scott (.400, five doubles), Banks Griffin (.387, a hit in all nine games) and Anthony Carrera (.286, two home runs).
A – King's Ridge Christian is 9-1, its only loss last month to Calvary Day. Players to watch are seniors Kyle Brnovich and Frasor Ellard and junior John Byrnes on the mound and preseason All-America catcher Lawson Hill. Hill is hitting .480 (12-for-25) with four doubles and three triples. Sophomores Carter Buchanan (.304) and Michael Wein (.360) are new to the lineup.
