Retired Lincoln County football coach Larry Campbell was arrested Wednesday morning on charges of simple battery and released on bond, several media outlets are reporting.
The arrest stems from a reported altercation at a Lincoln County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday evening, according to the Augusta Chronicle and two Augusta-area TV stations.
Campbell's son, Bryan Campbell, is Lincoln County's school superintendent.
According to WRDW-TV, citing a police report, Campbell confronted someone in attendance who publicly criticized Bryan Campbell in the meeting. The report said that Larry Campbell grabbed the alleged victim by his shirt collar and threatened him, according to the TV station.
Campbell was released on $5,000 bond, according to the reports.
Campbell, 65, retired as Lincoln County's football coach and athletics director on April 25 and remains on the payroll through the end of the academic year. His 477 victories are a Georgia record and rank third nationally. His teams won 11 state championships.
