The Lambert girls soccer team (14-2, 7-1, ranked No. 9 in Class AAAAAA) returned to action after spring break with a 5-0 victory Tuesday against Habersham Central to move within one victory of securing the top spot in Region 6-AAAAAA. Briarly Beauchamp scored two goals to lead the Longhorns.
During the break, several members of the team went on a tour to England, picking up 4-1 and 7-0 victories against local club teams. Sophomore Madison Eddleman scored four goals on the trip, and junior Rachel Priest had a hat trick in the second game. Lambert plays its final region game Friday against West Forsyth.
- Tournament time: The beginning of the state tournament is almost two weeks away, but the playoffs already have begun for some teams. Greenbrier secured a berth in the state playoffs with a 9-0 victory against Warner Robins in the quarterfinals of the Region 2-AAAAA tournament on Tuesday. Natalie Thompson scored three goals to lead the Wolfpack. Evans beat Jones County 3-1, and Houston County defeated Richmond Academy to advance. The semifinals will match Lakeside-Evans against Greenbrier and Evans against Houston County.
- Playoff preview: Fourth-ranked Grayson and No. 8 Collins Hill met on Saturday in a Gwinnett County matchup of region leaders, but it turned out to be not much of a contest. Region 8's Grayson got four goals from 2014 AJC state player of the year Jennifer Westendorf in an 8-2 victory. Both teams are undefeated in region play and have two regular-season games remaining.
