Class A-5A Boys: Westminster 10, Lovett 9 (OT)

Lovett rallied Saturday night from a 9-5 fourth quarter deficit to force overtime, but Westminster’s Jack Patton netted his third goal of the game to clinch the Wildcats’ fifth all-time state title. The victory, at Lakewood Stadium in south Atlanta, marked Westminster’s fifth straight against their Buckhead rival. The Wildcats’ never trailed and took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter with a David Vroon goal. Lovett closed out both of the first two quarters with late goals, but a second quarter goal by Jack Patton kept it locked at 2-2 entering the second half.

Patton tallied all three of his team-high assists in the third quarter. Patton found Will and Cope Fitzharris before connecting with Vroon to put Westminster up 5-3 entering the final frame.

Vroon found Will Fitzharris to push Westminster’s lead to 6-4, and Cope Fizharris and Patton extended the lead to 8-4 with their second goals of the game. Vroon notched a hat-trick on what proved to be Westmister’s final goal of regulation.

Blessed Trinity 11, Kell 9

Blessed Trinity captured the program’s second all-time state title by scoring a second consecutive two-goal victory over Kell for the Class A-5A title game. This year’s final was sent to Walton’s Raider Valley after Saturday’s championship at Lakewood Stadium was postponed due to issues with the goals and the lines on the field.

Kell, which came into the finals with the momentum of a grueling schedule that was conquered by a dominant postseason run fell behind early. Blessed Trinity took an early two-goal lead as Elise Hammelrath and Mary Markwordt found the net in the first six minutes of the game. Kell responded to tie it 2-2, but the Titans regained control as Kaley Attaway and Abbey Sokol extened the lead to 4-2.

Blessed Trinity took a 6-4 halftime lead and grew the lead to 9-6 before Sokol and Markwordt scored the final two goals for the Lady Titans.
