The Lassiter girls lacrosse team made a strong case to rise in the rankings when the new polls come out this week. The Lady Trojans, ranked No. 4 in Class AAAAAA, started last week with a 16-10 win over second-ranked Walton on Wednesday and finished their 4-0 run Saturday with a 12-9 win over Hutchison School (Tenn.), the No. 9 team in the South, according to LaxMagazine.com.
Lassiter (14-3) hasn’t lost to a Georgia team this season and will face top-ranked Milton on Tuesday with the area championship on the line in the regular season finale for both teams. Milton, which has won five straight state championships, hasn’t lost a game against a Georgia competitor since 2009.
- In their first week as the top-ranked team in Class AAAAAA, the Lambert boys continued their stellar play, stretching their winning streak to six games since a 13-10 loss to Area 3-AAAAAA rival Centennial on March 28. Included in the current winning streak are three victories over highly touted teams from Florida and Tennessee, a 12-11 overtime win over Lovett (No. 2 Class A-AAAAA) and Saturday's 9-8 win over No. 3 John's Creek.
The victory over the Gladiators leaves Lambert, Centennial and Johns Creek each with one loss in area play as the regular season draws to a close. Lambert has games remaining with Alpharetta (6-8) and South Forsyth (5-10), Centennial wraps up its area slate against South Forsyth on Thursday, and Johns Creek has completed its regular season.
- The top-ranked Westminster boys clinched the Area 2-AAAAA title with a dominating performance in a 16-2 win over No. 3 Allatoona on Friday. It was only the second time this season the Buccaneers (15-2) have been held to fewer than 10 goals; their previous low came in a 13-8 loss to McCallie School (Tenn.), the No. 7 team in the South in the LaxMagazine.com regional rankings.
Westminster (16-1) will close out its regular season with a non-area match against Johns Creek on Friday. The Wildcats have won eight straight since their loss to nationally ranked Boys Latin (Md.). Six wins during the streak have come against teams with winning records and four are currently ranked in their respective classification’s top 10.
- Georgia's last remaining unbeaten team – boys or girls, regardless of classification – took its first loss over the weekend, as the Cambridge girls fell, 12-11, to Bishop Eustace Prep (N.J.) on Saturday. Cambridge, which is ranked No. 1 in Class A-AAAAA, had scarcely been threatened on its way to 15 consecutive wins to open the season, winning by an average score of 17.9-5.2.
The Lady Bears, a quarterfinalist last season, will host Riverwood on Tuesday before finishing the regular season with a playoff tune-up against Northview (No. 6 Class AAAAAA).
